The 2024 college football season is through six weeks and the SEC saw plenty of upsets in Week 5. Alabama and Tennessee were both top-five teams and were upset in Week 5.
Following Week 5, which has SEC teams like Alabama, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Georgia, Missouri and Texas A&M all with one loss, here is what the playoff picture could look like.
SEC Bowl Projections after Week 6
College football playoff berths:
- Texas Longhorns
- Alabama Crimson Tide
- Georgia Bulldogs
- Texas A&M Aggies
The big change is the Tennessee Volunteers being out of the playoff field and replaced by the Texas A&M Aggies. Tennessee still has games against Alabama and Georgia and there is a good chance the Vols lose both, and three losses wouldn't get them in the playoffs.
Vols coach Josh Heupel, meanwhile, said the loss isn't ruining their season as he knows they still control their own destiny.
“Man, pretty simple. When moments like this happen, the outside world’s going to have a narrative for you. We talk about it when it’s going good, and tonight it didn’t go good. You’ve got to look at your teammates, in the eye," Heupel said, via 247Sports.
"Those are the opinions that matter. You’ve got to continue to pull the rope harder. We’ve got to continue to grow. Good teams get better throughout the course of the year. Still have a chance to be a really good football team.”
Ole Miss and Texas A&M both will likely need to run the table to get into the 12-team playoff.
Other SEC Bowl Projections
- Arkansas: Birmingham Bowl, Dec. 27
- South Carolina: Las Vegas Bowl, Dec. 27
- Missouri: Pop-Tarts Bowl, Dec. 28
- Kentucky: Music City Bowl, Dec. 30
- Ole Miss: ReliaQuest Bowl, Dec. 31
- LSU: Cheez-It Citrus Bowl, Dec. 31
- Tennessee: TaxSlayer Gator Bowl, Dec. 31
- Oklahoma: Texas Bowl, Dec. 31
In the projection, Florida, Mississippi State, Auburn and Vanderbilt all fall short of being bowl-eligible. Even though the Commodores beat Alabama, Vanderbilt has a tough schedule, and getting three more wins seems unlikely.
Other SEC teams will get into notable bowl games like LSU in the Citrus Bowl, Ole Miss in the ReliaQuest Bowl, and Tennessee in the Gator Bowl, among others.
