Sherrone Banfield Moore is an American football coach who became the first African-American head coach in Michigan’s illustrious football history. Born on February 3, 1986, Moore started his football career playing for the Butler Community College for two seasons before transferring to Oklahoma Sooners in 2006. Moore played in 14 games and helped the Sooners win two Big 12 Championships.
Moore began his coaching career as a graduate assistant for Louisville Cardinals and worked his way up to become a full-time assistant during the 2013 season as a tight ends coach. In 2014, he was hired by Central Michigan as the new tight ends coach and later was named an assistant head coach in his fourth and final year with the program. Then on January 15, 2018, Moore was hired by Michigan as the new tight ends coach and gradually shifted to become the offensive line coach after three seasons. Under his leadership, Michigan became the first college program to win back-to-back Joe Moore Awards in 2021 and 2022. Moore led Michigan to three back-to-back Big Ten Championships and the 2023 National Championship as the co-offensive coordinator.
Earlier this year, history was made when Moore was announced as the new head coach for the Michigan Wolverines, becoming the first Black head coach in the school’s history. Last season, Moore went 4-0 when Jim Harbaugh was suspended due potential NCAA rules violations. He took over Harbaugh who left for Los Angeles Chargers after leading Michigan to its first national championship in 26 years.
