The 12-team College Football Playoff has begun, and the first two games have been less than competitive as the game has shown. Notre Dame dominated Indiana, while Penn State held a 28–0 halftime lead over the SMU Mustangs. This led to the discussion that maybe the top 12 teams were not a great idea as these games are not very competitive thus far.

People took to social media to figure out whether these schools that didn't have much competition throughout their schedule should have made the College Football Playoff in the first place.

"'Deserving needs to be removed from discussion, its the best teams, which IU and SMU are not better than the 4 below them," one tweeted.
"Deserved is a whistle for Bama haters. The playoffs have never been able the most deserving, but who the best teams are. Every time a 'deserved' team got in, they got whipped," another tweeted.

The conversation continued as people are looking at both sides of this issue.

"I knew SMU was a fluke. Indiana and SMU never even played anyone this season," one tweeted.
"Dear Selection Committee: Please pay attention to strength of schedule to ensure a competitive playoff. Sincerely, College Football Fans," one tweeted.

It will be interesting to see how the remaining first-round games look to get a bit of a sample size to this. However, the first two games have not been very competitive, but the better team in terms of the College Football Playoff ranking has dominated thus far.

How were the teams selected in the College Football Playoff this season?

The College Football Playoff Selection Committee decides which teams can compete for the national championship and creates the bracket. This year, the five highest-ranking conference champions automatically in the bracket were the Oregon Ducks, Georgia Bulldogs, Arizona State Sun Devils, Boise State Broncos and SMU Mustangs. The top four are awarded first-round byes in the College Football Playoff and the fifth-ranked team competes in the first round.

The other seven teams are the "best nonconference champions" and are selected based on numerous factors. This season, they were the Penn State Nittany Lions, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Indiana Hoosiers, Tennessee Volunteers, Ohio State Buckeyes, Clemson Tigers and Texas Longhorns.
