Rhett Lashlee and the SMU Mustangs will travel to North Carolina for their week 9 showdown against the Duke Blue Devils. The game will be played at Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium. Both teams enter week 9 with a 6-1 record.

The Mustangs will be looking to extend their four-game winning streak following their 40-10 victory over the Stanford Cardinal. So will be SMU's starting QB in week 9?

SMU starting QB against Duke in week 9

Kevin Jennings will continue his duties as the starting QB for the SMU Mustangs. Preston Stone was initially the QB1 for the team this season after recovering from his injury. But after his lackluster performance in the first three games, Rhett Lashlee gave the responsibility to Jennings.

The Mustangs have not lost a game since Kevin Jennings took over as the starting QB in week 4. In seven games, he has 1,336 passing yards and nine TD passes for the Mustangs. Jennings also completed 97 of 147 passes he's attempted so far while boasting a 66% pass completion rate.

Coming out of South Oak Cliff High School as a three-star prospect, Jennings received offers from programs like Sam Houston, Lamar, and Texas A&M-Commerce. In the end, he decided to commit to the Mustangs in 2022.

During his freshman campaign, Jennings played in four games recording 205 passing yards and one TD pass. Last season, he saw significant playing time on the field and made his QB1 debut during the AAC Championship game after Preston Stone's injury.

Jennings ended the season with a total of 618 passing yards and five touchdowns. He was also successful in leading the Mustangs to an AAC title after defeating Tulane 26-14.

SMU's quarterback depth chart

While Kevin Jennings serves as the starting QB, redshirt sophomore Preston Stone, and redshirt freshman Keldric Luster are other options for Rhett Lashlee on the QB depth chart.

Stone redshirted his freshman season with the Mustangs and played in six games during the 2022 campaign. Last season, he was named as the team's QB1 and started in 12 games before going down with an injury. He had 3,197 passing yards and 28 TD passes, helping the Mustangs to an AAC conference showdown with Tulane.

On the other hand, Luster committed to playing for SMU as a part of the 2023 recruiting class. He redshirted his freshman campaign after playing for a limited time in three games. Luster is yet to make his debut for the Mustangs this season.
