SMU enters the 2024 college football season with lofty expectations and the aim of stacking up wins. However, this can only be made possible through elite quarterback play and competent playcalling.
Picking the right quarterback will be crucial for Rhett Lashlee's Mustangs. So here we will look at who will be the Mustangs' starting quarterback in the 2024 college football season.
Who will be Rhett Lashlee's QB1 in 2024?
#1 Preston Stone
Preston Stone was SMU's starting quarterback in 2023, and the job remains his heading into the 2024 season. Stone was thoroughly impressive in his sophomore season, throwing for 3,197 passing yards, the fourth most outstanding in the AAC.
He led the AAC in passing efficiency with a 161.3 rating and ranked first in the conference in passing yards per completion at 15.5.
Stone was rewarded for his impressive 2023 season, earning All-AAC Third Team and PFF All-AAC Team honors for his efforts. Hence, barring any unforeseen circumstances, he'll be the Mustangs' starting QB in his final season of collegiate football before he declares for the NFL Draft.
#2 Kevin Jennings
Kevin Jennings backed up Preston Stone in 2023. He passed for 618 yards and five touchdowns in eight appearances (two starts).
Kevin Jennings did what he had to do as a backup to one of the most efficient quarterbacks in the country and was always ready to step up in relief when needed.
He had a season-high in both passing and rushing yards in the 2024 AAC Championship Game on December 2, 2023, before recording another career high record in terms of passes made against Boston College on December 28, 2023.
Jennings is the SMU Mustangs' QB2 and should provide decent competition for Stone in the 2024 college football season.
#3 Charlie Fiser
Charlie Fiser will likely start the 2024 season as the SMU Mustangs' third-string quarterback. The former Pulaski Academy standout has yet to appear in his Mustangs career, but he's poised to step in if needed.
He'll be joined on the depth chart by freshmen Tyler Aronson, William Fierro, and Keldric Luster on the program's depth chart. It'll be interesting to see how Rhett Lashlee balances out the options at his disposal in 2024.
