Mike Norvell and the Florida State Seminoles are having one of the worst dropoffs in college football history. The Seminoles went from an unbeaten regular season in 2023 to losing eight out of their first nine games in 2024.
The Seminoles have just two games left this season, and it sounds like banter to suggest that they play for pride. Here's a look at what a college football insider said about the veteran coach's job security following a trying 2024 season.
Speaking on the job security of Norvell, Barrett Sallee said:
"Next season is a critical year for Mike Norvell. You don't want to give him a mulligan this year, and that's why he's shedding coordinators.
"Because someone, something, some group, some big money booster is on his a** trying to figure out how to make things better and, perhaps more importantly, insert his voice into the decision-making, which is a whole different story and does more harm than good. Mike Norvell is not getting fired this year; 1-9 is also not acceptable."
The Seminoles have mustered just one win this season, and that was against the California Golden Bears. The win came after a three-game losing streak to start the season, but Norvell's team has since gone on a fresh six-game losing streak.
Most big program coaches don't survive a five-game losing streak. However, maybe the Seminoles are giving Norvell some grace after the sensational work he did in previous seasons.
What next for Mike Norvell and the Florida State Seminoles?
Norvell and the Florida State Seminoles have a week off before they face the Charleston Southern Buccaneers. The 2023 iteration of the Seminoles would have viewed this game as a walk in the past, but it's impossible to put anything past the 2024 Seminoles.
Their upcoming game comes after almost two weeks of the new coordinators cooking up fresh schemes in training. It remains to be seen whether Norvell's moves to overturn his staff on Sunday can spark a revival for the team's fortunes.
However, you can't fault the coach for trying, as nothing seems to be working for the powerhouse program in 2024.
