After five seasons in the landscape, Spencer Rattler's college football journey finally ended this year. The quarterback started at Oklahoma as a five-star prospect who was expected to make significant impacts in the landscape, especially playing under Lincoln Riley.
However, despite the brilliant start, the quarterback's career experienced a downturn. This eventually got him out of Oklahoma to team up with South Carolina in 2022. Following his final season with the Gamecocks, is the quarterback a first-round pick in the draft?
Will Spencer Rattler get drafted in the first round?
Considering how his college career went from his days at Oklahoma to South Carolina, Spencer Rattler is not expected to go in the first round.
Also, the amount of QB talent available in the upcoming 2024 NFL draft makes it almost impossible for the Rattler to be considered on Day 1. Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels, J.J McCarthy, etc, are quarterbacks in line to be first-round selections.
According to many mock drafts, Rattler is projected to be a third-round pick in 2024, benefitting from his resurgence at South Carolina. While he is an early pick, many analysts forecast him to be a big steal for any team that eventually selects him in the draft.
Rattler was once projected as the first-overall pick
At a time during his college career at Oklahoma, Spencer Rattler was projected as a first-overall pick in the draft. However, this became unlikely after he was overthrown by Caleb Williams as the Sooners' starting quarterback in 2021, falling out of consideration for a first-round pick.
Rattler took over as Oklahoma's starting quarterback in 2020. His two predecessors in the role, Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray, were both Heisman winners. This created a lot of expectations for him in and out of the program. Nonetheless, he had the talent to navigate the pressure.
His first season as a starter went well, throwing for 3,031 yards and 28 touchdowns. He expectedly returned as a starter in 2021 and was a favorite to win the Heisman Trophy that season. This made many analysts project him as the first-overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft.
However, midway through the 2021 college football season, Spencer Rattler lost his starting berth to Caleb Williams. This eventually led him to transfer to South Carolina in 2022 rather than enter the draft.
