Steve Sarkisian has been the head coach for the Texas Longhorns since January 2021. Sarkisian is an experienced football coach, who will be entering his 24th year as a coach and 11th as a head coach. He was appointed as the 31st Head Football Coach for Texas. Sarkisian started a plan to rebuild the Texas program strategically through player development, recruiting, and establishing a strong team culture. This approach helped the Longhorns gradually move forward in the field, in 2021 they finished the season with a 5-7 record, the 2022 season with 8-5 and the 2023 season ended with a 12-2 record. In 2023 they also won the Big 12 Championship, finished third nationally, and advanced to the semifinals of the College Football Playoff. Sarkisian entered the 2024 season with a 25-14 record at Texas and 77-50 overall as a head coach, including six appearances in bowl games.

Steve Sarkisian had a remarkable season in 2023 with the Texas Longhorns. He led the team to a 12-2 record with its first Big 12 Championship since 2009 and also qualified for the College Football Playoff (CFP). He was a finalist in three different categories, the Bear Bryant Award, the George Munger Award, and the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award. Sarkisian received the Big 12 Coach of the Year from The Associated Press. The Longhorns finished the season with a No. 4 ranking in the Associated Press Poll, their highest figure in 15 years. He led Texas to a 15th position in scoring offense with 35.8 ppg and 15th in scoring defense with 18.9 ppg, making them in the Power-5 programs. Defensively, the team was ranked first in the Big 12 in terms of total defense made with the help of T'Vondre Sweat who earned a selection in the All-American First Team. He helped 11 players to get an invitation to the NFL Combine in early 2024 which was the highest ever in the program's history.
