Tennessee Volunteers' starting QB against the Kentucky Wildcats in Week 10
Redshirt freshman Nico Iamaleava will continue his duties as the starting quarterback of the Tennessee Volunteers. He served as the QB1 in all seven games so far for the team and has tallied a total of 1,413 passing yards and eight TD passes.
During their victory against Alabama, Nico Iamaleava completed 14 of the 27 passes he attempted while recording 194 passing yards and a touchdown. Iamaleava will be looking to continue developing his game on the field with the Vols.
Coming out of Warren High School, Iamaleava decided to commit to playing for the Vols as a part of the 2023 recruiting class. He redshirted his freshman campaign while serving as the backup to QB Joe Milton. Iamleava made an appearance in five games and tallied 314 passing yards and two TD passes.
He made his debut for the Vols as QB1 during their Citrus Bowl victory over the Iowa Hawkeyes. His performance in that game earned him the trust of head coach Josh Heupel who named him as the team's starter for this season.
Tennessee's quarterback depth chart
Apart from Nico Iamaleava, Josh Heupel also has redshirt senior Gaston Moore and freshman Jake Merklinger as a part of Tennessee's quarterback depth chart. Moore began his collegiate journey with the UCF Knights in 2020.
He went on to redshirt his freshman campaign with UCF before entering the transfer portal and joining the Vols as a redshirt freshman in 2021.
Last season, he saw limited time on the field in four games and tallied 36 passing yards. This season, the QB has seen limited time on the field while recording 163 passing yards and two TD passes.
On the other hand, Jake Merklinger joined Tennessee as a part of the 2024 recruiting class. He saw limited time on the gridiron during their games against Chattanooga and Kent State and has recorded 48 passing yards.
