The Texas A&M Aggies will face the Texas Longhorns at home in week 14 of the 2024 college football season. Mike Elko took over as the head coach of the program this season. So far, in his debut campaign, he's helped the Aggies secure Bowl eligibility while also being a contender for the SEC title.
Last week, Texas A&M succumbed to a 43-41 loss at the hands of the Auburn Tigers. They have put up an 8-3 (5-2 SEC Conference) campaign and are looking to bolster their chances to compete in the new 12-team playoffs with a win in the Lone Star Showdown. But who will be Mike Elko's starting quarterback in week 14?
Texas A&M Aggies' starting quarterback against the Texas Longhorns in week 14
Marcel Reed will continue his duties as the starting quarterback of the Aggies during their showdown against the Longhorns this weekend. Reed initially began the season as the backup to Connor Weigman. However, his dual-threat abilities helped the program secure a crucial victory over LSU in week 9.
This led to Reed earning the trust of Mike Elko, who has named him the starting quarterback in every game since then. Marcel Reed has tallied 1,426 yards and 12 TDs passing, while also rushing for 441 yards and six TDs.
Coming out of Montgomery Bell High School, Marcel Reed committed to playing for the Aggies as a part of the 2023 recruiting class. He redshirted his freshman campaign while making three appearances for the team under previous head coach Jimbo Fisher.
Reed understands what's at stake during their Week 14 showdown against the Longhorns. This will also be the first game in the Texas A&M vs Texas Longhorns rivalry since 2011.
"The mindset for me and the team is that we're in the playoffs now. A lot of people are waiting for this 12-team playoff bracket to drop. We're in it now... It's win or go home," Reed said.
Texas A&M's quarterback depth chart
Apart from Marcel Reed, the Texas A&M Aggies also have Connor Weigman and Jaylen Henderson as options in their quarterback depth chart. Weigman committed to the Aggies in 2022 and served as the third-string QB during his freshman campaign.
Last season, he competed for the QB1 position with Max Johnson and earned the job. Unfortunately, Weigman's campaign was cut short after he suffered a season-ending foot injury after four games. He returned as the QB1 of the team this season before being replaced by Marcel Reed.
On the other hand, Jaylen Henderson began his college journey with Fresno State as a part of the 2021 recruiting class. He saw limited time in two seasons with the program before joining the Aggies last season.
He took over as the starting quarterback after both Weigman and Johnson suffered injuries. Henderson ended his debut campaign with the team tallying a total of 715 yards and six TDs passing. Henderson is yet to make an appearance for Texas A&M this season.
