As Texas prepares for a massive CFP semifinal tilt against Ohio State, they also have to acknowledge some Longhorns who have left or are leaving. Even top teams like Texas lose some players to the portal and the Longhorns have seen a handful of players already choose the portal.
Here's a rundown of the top five Longhorns who have entered the portal ahead of the CFP semifinals.
Texas transfer tracker: Top five Longhorns in portal ahead of CFP semis
#5 Justice Finkley, DE
A four-star prospect from Alabama, Finkley seems to be getting buried on the Longhorns depth chart. In three seasons in Austin, he has 26 tackles with four tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.
He had most of his playing time in 2023 but saw action in just six games this season. Finkley has one season of remaining eligibility and is still hunting his next school.
#4 Sydir Mitchell, DT
A three-star recruit from New Jersey, the massive 350-pound Mitchell has seen little action in two seasons at Texas. He has just seven tackles, including a single tackle for loss, over those two seasons.
Mitchell played just four games in 2023, retaining a redshirt season. He has three years of eligibility and has committed to LSU out of the portal as his next college home.
#3 Derion Gulette, LB
A four-star in state prospect, Gulette spent two seasons at Texas but barely saw the field. After redshirting in 2023, he saw time in just five games this season, ending up with two tackles.
Gulette has three seasons of remaining eligibility and has chosen Mississippi State as his portal destination. Off a 2-10 season, the Bulldogs will likely give Gulette plenty of playing time in 2025.
#2 Jaray Bledsoe, DL
A four-star recruit from Texas, Bledsoe hasn't seen very much action in three seasons in Austin. Blesoe's career totals are just seven tackles and a tackle for loss.
He played only one game in 2022 and thus retained a redshirt season. He will have two season of eligibility left, and, like Gulette, he has chosen to move along to Mississippi State.
#1 Johntay Cook II, WR
A top-50 national recruit in the class of 2023, Cook chose to leave Texas in November. Cook showed flashes of excellence in his two seasons with the Longhorns.
He had 16 catches for 273 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Cook will have two remaining seasons of eligibility and has chosen Washington for his portal destination.
