The Toldeo Rockets will be on the road to face the Eastern Michigan Eagles on Saturday at noon ET. The game can be seen on ESPNU.
Both teams are coming off losses last Saturday as Toledo (5-3, 2-2 Mid-American Conference) was defeated at home by Bowling Green 41-26, while Eastern Michigan (5-3, 2-2) lost 25-21 on the road against Akron.
Toledo vs Eastern Michigan: Preview
Toledo is an 8.5-point road favorite, with the over/under set at 53.5 points.
The Rockets trailed by eight at the half against the Falcons and were outscored 10-0 in the fourth quarter.
“You don’t ever want to lose to that crew,” Toledo Jason Candle said on Monday, via ToledoBlade. “Tough chapter in this rivalry... I think they had a good plan. I thought our kids hung in there and fought and gave us a chance in the third quarter to go win the football game, which we weren’t able to do.”
The Rockets were led by Tucker Gleason who threw for 320 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Jerjuan Newton had 164 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Although Toledo is now tied for fifth in the MAC, Candle knows the conference is still up for grabs and has confidence in his team.
“We’ve got to do a better job throughout the course of the week of practice, and, obviously, it’s my job to put a plan together to make sure that happens,” Candle said. “But I think we’ve got good leadership on our team amongst the locker room, and I think those guys have a lot of pride. This is a tough football game to drop in the middle of the year. But there’s a lot of football to be played in this league.”
For the season, Toledo is led by Gleason who has thrown for 1,645 yards, 15 touchdowns and six interceptions. Newton leads the team with 745 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns.
Defensively, Braden Awls has three interceptions, Darius Alexander has 2.5 sacks, and Maxen Hook has 73 tackles.
On the other hand, Eastern Michigan, trailed 18-0 at the half against the Zips and was not able to complete a comeback.
In the loss, Cole Snyder threw for 346 yards and two touchdowns, while Delbert Mimms rushed for 52 yards and a touchdown.
Saturday's game is expected to be a competitive one between teams who desperately need a win to keep their MAC title hopes alive.
Ultimately, the difference will be the Rockets' offense. Toledo should be able to score early like Akron did and hold onto the lead to get a big road win.
