Just a week after being upset by the Vanderbilt Commodores, the Alabama Crimson Tide bounced back with a narrow 27-25 victory against the South Carolina Gamecocks. The game featured a 19-point collapse by the Tide that almost let the Gamecocks hand them their second loss of the season.
Alabama has been the subject of a lot of criticism over the past decade due to its dominance under Nick Saban. Naturally, any opportunity given to fans to poke fun at the program for losing a game or even just close to losing will be taken advantage of.
Social media was all over Alabama throughout the game. Here are some of the highlights:
A close call to a broken season
Even in the expanded 12-team format of the College Football Playoff, having two losses is cutting it close, and that's against high-quality opponents. A loss to South Carolina would have been Alabama's second loss to a team that many believe would not even be able to play in a bowl game this season.
Fortunately for first-year Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer, Gamecocks quarterback LaNorris Sellers threw an interception to defensive back Domani Jackson with just seconds left to secure the victory.
Looking ahead for the Tide
With this narrow victory, the Crimson Tide are still alive. But securing a spot in the playoff won't be easy as they are about to enter their toughest stretch of the season.
They have three consecutive games against ranked opponents: No. 8-ranked Tennessee, No. 21-ranked Missouri and No. 13-ranked LSU. All three SEC foes will be fighting with them for a playoff spot a head-to-head tiebreaker could even be the difference.
Jalen Milroe had his weakest performance of the season so far as he recorded just 209 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. His play will need to be at its best going forward as he will be thrown into some of the toughest QB matchups of the season in the coming weeks.
