The college football season is a tough grind. That's why there are just 11 undefeated teams left in the ranks of FBS football. The College Football Playoff is basically guaranteed to include teams with one loss, and likely some with even two or three.
Here's a ranking of the 10 best teams that still haven't taken a loss.
Top 10 undefeated college football teams after Week 7
#10, No. 25 Navy (5-0)
Navy has rolled to a big start by scoring 43.8 points per game. The always physical ground attack is racking up 6.3 yards per carry, and that has helped Navy chew through some weak competition. No. 12 Notre Dame and No. 23 Army still await.
#9, No. 23 Army (6-0)
Many of the same things that are true of Navy are true of Army. The Black Knights averaging 39.7 ppg and have given up just 9.8 ppg. Army is rushing for just under 6.9 ypc and has also taken advantage of some weak opponents. They've still got to face Notre Dame and Navy. (Is it too early to dream of 11-0 Navy vs. 11-0 Army?)
#8, No. 20 Pittsburgh (6-0)
The Panthers have squeaked through three one-score games, beating Cincinnati by one, West Virginia by four and California by two. Can they keep that up? With No. 21 SMU and No. 10 Clemson still ahead on the schedule, it'll be tough.
#7, No. 13 BYU (6-0)
The surprise of the Big 12, BYU has navigated close wins over SMU (18-15) and Baylor (34-28). One edge the Cougars have now is that there are no currently ranked teams on the remaining schedule. Still, ESPN gives them just a 2.9% chance of winning out.
#6, No. 9 Iowa State (6-0)
The other big surprise of the Big 12, the Cyclones have leaned heavily on a stout defense. ISU is allowing just 11.0 ppg and has intercepted 10 passes while allowing just five touchdowns. Seventeenth-ranked Kansas State is the only ranked team ahead on the schedule, and ESPN gives Iowa State an 8.1% chance of winning out.
#5, No. 16 Indiana (6-0)
The Hoosiers have to be the feel-good story of the college football season. Lightly regarded, the Hoosiers and new coach Curt Cignetti have racked up 47.5 ppg. With 516 yards per game, a 54% conversion rate on third downs and 34 scores in 37 red zone trips, Indiana has been efficient. That said, they still have to play No. 4 Ohio State and No. 24 Michigan, so the undefeated path is perilous.
#4, No. 6 Miami (6-0)
The Hurricanes have been living dangerously recently, winning the last two games by the relative skin of their teeth. But the Hurricanes have put up 47.7 ppg, and quarterback Cam Ward is a Heisman candidate. There are no ranked teams ahead on the schedule, and ESPN gives Miami a 15.8% chance of winning out to the playoff.
#3, No. 3 Penn State (6-0)
With a pair of one-score wins over Bowling Green and USC, Penn State has had to be lucky a few times. Still, a solid offense and defense give the Nittany Lions a shot to keep it up. Ohio State is the only legitimately scary team left on the schedule, and outside that, Penn State has a solid path to staying undefeated.
#2, No. 2 Oregon (6-0)
Having bested Ohio State, Oregon certainly earned its spot on this list. The usually explosive offense has been merely OK (only one game above 37 points), and the two games so far against ranked teams were both close. The remaining schedule includes No. 22 Illinois and Michigan, but ESPN gives the Ducks just a 13% shot to win out to the playoff.
#1, No. 1 Texas (6-0)
The Longhorns have certainly earned the top spot. Between scoring 43.2 ppg and holding foes to 6.3, Texas' skills are obvious. Opponents have only been in the red zone seven times in six games against the Horns. The remaining games include No. 5 Georgia and No. 14 Texas A&M, but ESPN gives the Horns a 33.8% shot at winning out and staying undefeated to the CFP.
