If the Penn State Nittany Lions want to stop the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, their defense has to sustain quarterback Riley Leonard's offense in the 2025 Orange Bowl on Thursday. The team did well against Mountain West Champions Boise State in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal, restricting them to just 14 points, recording 48 solo tackles, three sacks and three interceptions.
On average, the Nittany Lions allowed just 15.8 points per game while recording 39.8 solo tackles and 2.6 sacks per game this season. They average 1.2 interceptions and 0.6 forced fumbles per game. Additionally, they managed to score 0.27 defensive touchdowns per game while recording an impressive 6.07 tackles for loss.
Their defense is spearheaded by several key personnel, but the below three stand out the most.
3 Penn State defensive players to watch out for in 2025 Orange Bowl
1) Abdul Carter (DE)
Abdul Carter has been a game-changer for Penn State’s defense this season, tallying 63 tackles, including 11 sacks. His ability to penetrate the offensive line makes him a nightmare for quarterbacks. Carter’s knack for forcing fumbles (2) and disrupting plays at the line of scrimmage will be crucial. Apart from this, he has three passes defended.
2) Dani Dennis-Sutton (DE)
Dani Dennis-Sutton has proven to be a key piece on the edge, recording 36 tackles and 6.5 sacks this season. With three passes defended and a fumble recovery to his name, he’s shown bright in clutch moments. Sutton’s performance in the Orange Bowl could determine how effectively Penn State contains its opponent's offensive threats.
3) Zakee Wheatley (S)
Zakee Wheatley has been a standout in the secondary, amassing 79 tackles and four passes defended this season. His two interceptions, including one for 28 yards, make him a game-altering threat for the Fighting Irish.
Wheatley’s skillset will be invaluable in both coverage and run support. Look for him to take advantage of any mistakes by the opposing quarterback.
There are some other players as well, as safety Jaylen Reed, linebacker Kobe King and cornerback AJ Harris whose contribution could be helpful in giving the ball back to their offense.
