The Penn State Nittany Lions are two wins away from their first national title since 1986. The next step is facing the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the Orange Bowl at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Thursday.

The Nittany Lions looked dominant against SMU and Boise State in the first two rounds of the College Football Playoff. Even though the defense has given the Penn State attack some short fields to work with, the offense has also answered the bell when needed.

Against Notre Dame, James Franklin’s squad will face off against a tougher defense than in the previous rounds. The Fighting Irish limited Indiana and Georgia to 17 and 10 points, respectively, in the first two rounds.

Here's a closer look at three Penn State offensive players to keep an eye on in the Orange Bowl.

Like their opponents on Thursday, the Nittany Lions like to run the ball, control the clock, and advance the ball methodically. The Irish will be the toughest defense they've faced in the CFP, but here are three players who can come up big in Miami.

#3. Kaytron Allen, Running Back

Kaytron Allen splits time in the backfield with Nicholas Singleton. While both players can take over, it’s been Allen who has been slightly more dangerous in the postseason.

The Norfolk, Virginia native has run for 204 yards in the CFP. Singleton is more explosive, but to beat the Irish, Penn State might want to control the ball and keep the Notre Dame offense on the sideline.

In that sense, Allen probably fits the game plan better. His running style is more physical than Singleton’s, which would also help wear down the defense. In any case, both runners will be of importance.

#2. Drew Allar, Quarterback

Before he committed to staying in Happy Valley for his senior year, Drew Allar was considered one of the top quarterback prospects for the 2025 NFL draft. Allar has passed for 3,192 yards, 24 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

His production has slipped a little in the playoffs, but that’s mainly because the Nittany Lions have run the ball so well and focused on managing the clock as the games have progressed.

if the Irish are able to slow down the Penn State ground game Allar may be asked to do more. He is a solid passer but hasn’t taken part in many shootouts this season, going over 300 yards only twice.

#1. Tyler Warren, Tight End

Not often is a tight end the focal point of an offense, but that is the case for Penn State. Tyler Warren leads the team with 98 receptions for 1,158 yards and eight scores. No other receiver has as many as 50 catches or 730 yards.

The senior from Mechanicsville, Virginia caught six balls for 63 yards and two touchdowns against the Broncos. His second touchdown catch came at a key moment, with Boise State down three points in the third quarter.

Without many proven weapons on the outside and going against a strong Irish secondary, Warren might be the most important target for Allar in Miami.
