The college football season is through five weeks, and some teams' 2024 has already gone bad. Schools like Florida State entered the year with hopes of making the College Football Playoff, but that won't happen this season.
Entering Week 6, here are the top five college football coaches on the hot seat, with their jobs potentially being on the line.
Top 5 college football coaches entangled in firing before Week 6 games
#1, Mike Norvell, FSU
Mike Norvell would have been considered in the running for Coach of the Year in 2023. He led FSU to an undefeated 13-0 season and won the ACC, but didn't get into the College Football Playoff.
Now, in 2024, Florida State is off to a terrible 1-4 start and is set to play Clemson on Saturday in a game the Seminoles are massive underdogs. It's likely that FSU will only win two to four games, and that leaves Norvell a prime candidate to be fired.
#2, Hugh Freeze, Auburn
Hugh Freeze's time in Auburn could be coming to an end.
Freeze is in his second season as the coach of the Tigers, but Auburn went 6-7 in his first season and is now on a 2-3 season. Auburn is 0-2 in SEC play, and the Tigers blew games against Arkansas and Oklahoma while also losing to Cal.
Freeze has also been critical in the media of his players, and Auburn's fanbase seems to be losing interest in the coach.
#3, PJ Fleck, Minnesota
PJ Fleck has been the coach of the Minnesota Golden Gophers since 2017, but as of late, he hasn't won enough games.
Against Power Four opponents, Minnesota is 3-10 in the last two seasons, which is not good enough for a Big Ten team that had hopes of competing this season.
Minnesota plays USC on Saturday in a game the Golden Gophers are underdogs in. If Minnesota gets blown out, Fleck's job security will be put into question.
#4, Trent Dilfer, UAB
Trent Dilfer was a surprise hire by UAB, and he could be on the chopping block.
UAB is off to a terrible 1-3 start and has lost three straight games, losing by double digits in all three to LA-Monroe, Arkansas and Navy.
The Blazers will likely be underdogs for several straight games, and it wouldn't be a surprise if they lost five or six more in a row, and if they start 1-7, Dilfer would likely be fired.
#5, Dave Aranda, Baylor
Dave Aranda has been the coach of the Baylor Bears since 2020, and under his helm, the school has gone 25-28 with just one winning season.
Since the 12-2 record in 2021, Aranda and Baylor have struggled mightily. The Bears now go on the road to play Iowa State in Week 6, and if Baylor gets blown out, Aranda's job status will be under question.
