The transfer portal is still rolling along and SEC teams have some worthy targets still out there. One complicating factor in the portal is a later opening date for teams who play later (or multiple) postseason games. With players still rolling in, here are some standouts the SEC should target. And, yes, we're calling for a little SEC-on-SEC portal nabbing here, starting with our top prospect.
Top 5 players available in transfer portal that SEC should nab
5. Makhi Hughes, Tulane RB
Hughes is a standout running back who has been brilliant in two years at Tulane. Recent rumors are that Oregon will land the talented Hughes, but the SEC could certainly utilize a true feature back.
Hughes rushed for 2,779 yards and 22 touchdowns in two seasons at Tulane. He'd be a clear upgrade for at least half of the SEC at running back and should be a significant focus of the league.
4. Emmanuel Pregnon, USC G
Pregnon is one of the top linemen available in the portal. A transfer from Wyoming, he was a two-year starter at USC. He even earned second-team All-Big Ten plaudits in 2024 from the Associated Press.
Pregnon is a 6-foot-5, 320-pound line standout who could be an impact interior lineman for the vast majority of SEC teams. He is a recent portal entry, so his recruitment is still apparently open.
3. Noah Thomas, Texas A&M WR
A 6-foot-6 standout at receiver, Thomas spent three seasons at Texas A&M and has made himself one of the top portal options at his position.
SEC schools apparently are going all in on Thomas, which certainly makes sense. In three years at A&M, he's caught 73 passes for 984 yards and 15 touchdowns. He has gradually improved year-to-year and will be a contributor at his next home.
2. Tacario Davis, Arizona CB
An outstanding cornerback, Davis became a standout with an impressive 2023 season. His 2024 totals don't approach the same level, but in part, it may be because offenses stopped testing him.
In the last two years, Davis had 69 tackles and broke up 21 passes, including 15 in 2023. He's also 6-foot-4 and would be an important SEC component in a successful defense as an outside cover corner.
1. Damon Wilson II, Georgia LB
A national top-50 recruit by Georgia from Florida, Wilson has all the tools necessary for success. Playing time was a bit hard to come by in the crowded Georgia locker room and after two seasons, Wilson has entered the portal.
In 2024, he had 22 tackles, including six tackles for loss and three sacks. Whoever signs the agile 6-foot-4 standout will get a fine player with two years of eligibility.
