The transfer portal has not been kind to college football's smaller teams. Consider the Texas State Bobcats, preparing for an appearance in the First Responder Bowl against the North Texas Mean Green. A veritable horde of Bobcats have announced intentions to transfer or have already chosen transfer venues.
Here's a rundown of the top five Bobcats who have entered the portal before their team's bowl appearance.
Top 5 Texas State players in portal ahead of bowl
5. Terry Webb, DT
Webb was a two-year starter for the Bobcats and spent two seasons at a JUCO. In two years at Texas State, Webb has 43 tackles, including eight tackles for loss and three sacks. Webb hasn't picked his next school but has been linked to Auburn and Purdue, among others.
4. Joshua Eaton, CB
A transfer from Oklahoma, Eaton spent three seasons with the Sooners and two more at Texas State. But because one of those seasons was 2020 and he redshirted in 2022, he's got a year left to play.
At TSU, Eaton had 49 tackles and 13 pass break-ups over two seasons. He has picked Michigan State for his last year of college eligibility.
3. Dominique Ratcliff, DT
After a season at Louisiana, Ratcliff has spent three years at Texas State. He has racked up 67 tackles, including 12 tackles for loss and five sacks in that run. A mammoth tackle, Ratcliff has picked Indiana for his portal destination. He'll have one final season of eligibility to pursue with the Hoosiers.
2. Ismail Mahdi, RB
Mahdi was an FCS transfer (after one season) who had two outstanding years at Texas State. Between 2023 and 2024, he rushed for 2,322 yards and 14 touchdowns. He also caught 44 passes for another 470 yards and three scores. Mahdi would be at the top of the list except for having just one year of eligibility left. He picked Arizona for his next portal destination.
1. Alex Harkey, OT
Harkey has had a long run, from Colorado to JUCO to Texas State. An outstanding tackle, he started two seasons at Texas State. At 6-foot-5 and 330 pounds, Harkey has impressive size to go with his experience.
He's one of the top offensive linemen who entered the portal and chose Oregon for the final year of his college career. Harkey should see significant action with the Ducks in 2025.
