The UNLV Rebels faced the California Golden Bears in the LA Bowl, but the transfer portal still loomed. The 11-3 Rebels completed a near-dream season, but then had to face the inevitable player losses. Here's a rundown of a few significant UNLV losses and a list of the rest of the portal losses.
UNLV transfer portal tracker: all players who have entered the portal
Greg Burrell, RB
Burrell, a three-star recruit from Las Vegas, saw significant action with the Rebels as a true freshman. He has still chosen to enter the transfer portal. Burrell rushed for 366 yards and three touchdowns on 65 carries.
Burrell reached double-figure carry totals only twice this year. A highlight was picking up 101 yards in Week 2 against Utah Tech. Still, he topped 40 yards in four of UNLV's final five regular-season games. His 5.6 yards per carry shows tremendous ability and he'll be an interesting player in the portal.
Tony Grimes, CB
Grimes is looking for his fourth school in the portal. He played three seasons at North Carolina, transferred to Texas A&M for 2023 and didn't see any action, and then came to UNLV for 2024. Grimes had 97 tackles and 20 passes broken up including an interception in his time at North Carolina.
At UNLV, Grimes played in 12 games with 20 tackles and six passes broken up. He's got another year of eligibility because his freshman season was 2020 and the extra year due to COVID will give him one last season.
Michael Allen, RB
Allen transferred in from North Carolina State but didn't see a ton of action with the Rebels. Allen had 519 rushing yards in two seasons with the Wolfpack. But at UNLV, he only played in three games. He had 108 rushing yards on 19 carries, but a few minor injuries held him back and Allen decided to redshirt.
Since he has redshirted, Allen will have two seasons of eligibility left. He was a four-star recruit out of high school and could certainly have two big seasons ahead. He's already committed to Marshall.
Matthew Sluka, QB
Sluka was one of the most controversial portal stories of the year. As the starting quarterback, he led UNLV to a 3-0 start but then complained of unfulfilled promises regarding NIL money. When Sluka went public with the allegations, UNLV insisted that all sums due had been paid, and ultimately, Sluka decided he would redshirt for the season and transfer.
Sluka passed for almost 6,000 yards at FCS Holy Cross and will still have a season of portal eligibility remaining. His next stop will be interesting to see.
