Vanderbilt vs. Auburn: Preview

Vanderbilt is a 6.5-point road underdog against Auburn, with the over/under set at 48 points.

The Commodores have been one of the surprise teams this season, as they have upset wins over Alabama and Virginia Tech while narrowly losing to Texas. Despite the Commodores keeping the game close, coach Clark Lea said the team felt like it could have won.

"I've got a disappointed team," Lea said, via Tennessean. "I think it's important that ... we allow for time for this to hurt, as my team expected to win that game, and to come up short is unfortunate.
"We have a good team that has to play a certain way to win, and we're interested in winning, so we're not interested in coming up just short."

The Commodores are led by quarterback Diego Paiva, who's thrown for 1,534 yards, 13 touchdowns and three interceptions. He's also rushed for 537 yards and four touchdowns. Elie Stowers leads the way with 496 receiving yards and three touchdowns.

Defensively, the Commodores have eight interceptions, while Nicholas Rinaldi leads the way with four sacks, and Bryan Longwell has 56 tackles.

Auburn, meanwhile, is coming off a road upset win over Kentucky. The Tigers played well, as in the game, quarterback Payton Thorne threw for 176 yards and a touchdown, while Jarquez Hunter rushed for 278 yards and two touchdowns.

"Just really proud of our kids," coach Hugh Freeze said of the win, via Montgomery Advertiser. "The reality is, down 10-0 with an interception, it could have grown. A lot of teams, after going through the disappointments we’ve gone through in losing difficult games this year could have easily said ‘Oh my,’ and it could have gotten away from us.
"Our kids chose to fight, and think that’s a testament to the character on this team and what we’re trying to build here. Very thankful and pleased with a lot of things that happened in that game."

Auburn is led by Hunter, who has rushed for 863 yards and five touchdowns. KeAndre Lambert-Smith has 579 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.

Defensively, the Tigers are led by Kayin Lee, who has two interceptions. Keldric Faulk has seven sacks, and Dorian Mausi Jr. has 50 tackles.

Vanderbilt has been playing well this season, and the Commodores should be able to keep this game close. The Tigers did have their best game of the season, and they should be able to get after Paiva and force him to make bad decisions.

Ultimately, Auburn will be able to edge out a win, but it should be a back-and-forth entertaining game.

Prediction: Auburn 27, Vanderbilt 24.
