The No. 7 ranked Miami Hurricanes secured a thrilling 38-34 victory over the Virginia Tech Hokies in Week 5. Two touchdown passes from Cam Ward in the fourth quarter put the Hurricanes in the lead and eventually gave them the win.

However, Virginia Tech's Da'Quan Felton scored a Hail Mary touchdown with just a few seconds left. However, it was controversially overturned by the referees. So what led to the officials making this decision?

Why was the Hokies's TD against Miami overturned?

The Hail Mary touchdown by the Hokies in the fourth quarter went into review. After a lot of deliberation, the referees decided to overturn the play, leading to the Miami Hurricanes securing the win. The ACC released a statement after the game to explain the controversial call in the Week 5 showdown.

"During the review process of the last play of the Virginia Tech at Miami game, it was determined that the loose ball was touched by a Miami player while he was out of bounds, which makes it an incomplete pass and immediately ends the play," read the ACC statement.

Virginia Tech players believed that they had won the game following the 30-yard touchdown. However, the overturning of their play left them visibly disappointed. Miami head coach Mario Cristobal was asked about his emotions while waiting for the review.

"It's wild," he said. "In college football, you're never all the way clear and easy to win a game, you're never all the way out of it. It just keeps going. We did talk about it, that you don't leave a game like this in the hands of the officials because you might be disappointed. At the end of the day, we just found a way to win."

Virginia Tech head coach Brent Pry left disappointed with the review

After the game ended, Brent Pry opened up about how the decision to overturn their game-winning touchdown was a difficult one. He further went on to talk about how he hoped the referees made the right decision in giving the Miami Hurricanes the controversial victory.

" That's a tough one right there. I hope they got that call right. To take it from our kids, our coaches, our fans, I hope they got it right."

Pry also opened up about how his players were hurt by the decision as they gave it their all in the game. Nevertheless, he heaped praise on his team and was proud of their performance on the gridiron.

"They're hurting. That's why I said I hope they got it right. I can tell them I'm proud, and I did, but that ain't helping them right now."

With this victory, the Hurricanes have extended their winning streak to five games. On the other hand, Virginia Tech is now on a two-game losing streak. It will be interesting to see if this controversial Week 5 showdown has an impact on their next game against Stanford.
