It was another disappointing season for Virginia in 2024 following a 5-7 finish. The Cavaliers once again missed out on a bowl game, last playing one in 2019. It was, however, an improvement from the two previous seasons of Tony Elliot.
Just like many other college football programs in the landscape, the Cavaliers have seen a handful of its players hit the transfer portal. This is bound to cause significant changes to the roster ahead of the 2025 season.
Here’s a look at the Virginia players on the transfer portal:
Virginia Transfer Portal Tracker
#1 Malcolm Greene, CB
Greene transferred to Virginia from Clemson ahead of the 2023 season, but his journey with the Cavaliers has come to an end. After playing in the first four games of the 2024 season, he redshirted the remainder of the year to preserve his final season of eligibility.
#2 Anthony Colandrea, QB
Colandrea earned the Cavaliers' starting quarterback role midway through his freshman season. However, he announced his decision to enter the transfer portal just a day after being benched in favor of Tony Muskett for UVA's season finale against Virginia Tech.
#3 Malachi Fields, WR
Fields is undoubtedly one of the biggest portal losses for Virginia this cycle. The wide receiver teamed up with the Cavaliers in 2001 and has grown to become an important player on the team. He leaves with 126 receptions for 1,849 yards and 11 touchdowns in 36 games.
#4 JR Wilson, WR
Wilson impressed significantly during the fall camp, creating a lot of anticipation but missed the first four games of the season due to a knee injury. On his return, he struggled to meet his breakout potential. He has two years of eligibility remaining.
#5 Michael Diatta, DL
Diatta is one of the most senior players on the Cavaliers' roster in 2024. He has played in 35 games for the program over the past four years. After recording his most productive season with career highs 31 total tackles and 13 solos, Diatta has decided to continue elsewhere.
#6 Ben Smiley, DE
Smiley is one of the longest-serving players on the Cavalier’s roster. Over his six-year career at the program, he appeared in 40 games with 12 starts, recording 50 total tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks. With one year of eligibility left, he wants to explore a new opportunity.
#7 Jaden Gibson, WR
Gibson enrolled at Virginia in 2023 and immediately became part of the wide receiver rotation, appearing in 18 games over two seasons. He recorded five receptions for 54 yards as a true freshman in 2023. This season, he tallied 10 catches for 91 yards across 10 games.
