Nick Saban will forever be a part of the history of the Alabama Crimson Tide football program. During the 18 seasons he was in Tuscaloosa, Saban led the Crimson Tide to six national championships and turned many players into stars.
A video has been posted on social media that looks at Saban's first few moments as the Alabama head coach.
After landing at the Tuscaloosa airport in 2007 with his family, Saban was welcomed by a large contingent of Crimson Tide fans.
Nick Saban was already an established coach before he went to Alabama. His coaching career started in Toledo. After a brief stint in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns, he returned to college football with the Michigan State Spartans.
However, it was his time at the LSU Tigers that put Saban onto the map. In 2003, he led the Tigers to a national championship after a school-high 13-win regular season.
After LSU, two average years in the NFL with the Miami Dolphins followed. But after Alabama fired head coach Mike Shula (in what was his only stint in both college football and as a head coach), Saban was top of their list to replace him.
Writing at the time of Saban's arrival in 2007, Sports Illustrated described how the fans responded to the arrival of the coach:
"They came in motor homes, private jets, $30,000 pickup trucks, $400 cars and dime-store flip-flops to see Nick Saban walk the sideline of Bryant-Denny Stadium in April."
"They have welcomed him as Caesar, as Pharaoh, and paid him enough money to burn a wet dog. Now he will take them forward by taking them back to the glory of their past."
The 2007 Season: An exception for Nick Saban
However, things would not start as expected in Nick Saban's time with the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Inheriting a team from former head coach Shula, this was a season where Alabama struggled. After winning their first three games, the Crimson Tide would struggle against most of their SEC rivals that they would later dominate.
They would end the season with a 7-6 record overall and a 4-4 record against their fellow SEC teams. However, in the history books, Alabama finished with a 2-6 record, with a large number of their wins being vacated due to NCAA violations found in the program.
This poor 2007 season may have been predicted in the Sports Illustrated article from above:
"It may take two years, three, more, to be in the discussion again when people talk about the best teams in college football. But they know he will take them home."
A season later, Saban led Alabama to the SEC championship game, their first since 1999, when they would lose to Tim Tebow and his Florida Gators. However, 2009 brought the ultimate success, as Saban won his first national championship with Alabama, defeating the Texas Longhorns.
