Colorado safety Shilo Sanders was one of the stars of the show as the Buffaloes recorded a comprehensive 34-7 win over the Arizona Wildcats in Week 8. The safety who is easing his way back in after breaking his forearm in Week 2 action was widely criticized for his performance against the Kansas State Wildcats in the Buffs' narrow 31-28 Week 7 loss.
A year ago with the Sanders clan newly in Boulder and Colorado the talk of the town, Shilo had another defining moment in the FBS. In the heated Rocky Mountain rivalry game against the Colorado State Rams, Sanders recorded his first career pick-six returning an 80-yard mispass by Rams quarterback Brayden Fowler Nicolosi for a touchdown.
Shilo's mother Pilar Sanders posted a 2023 clip on her YouTube channel, which showed herself and her daughter Shelomi Sanders wildly celebrating the safety's pick-six in the Folsom Field crowd.
"That's right we called it, we called it. We knew he was gonna do it. That's my baby running, my baby was running," Pilar Sanders said. (5:30)
Shilo Sanders finished his pick-six with a buoyant high steps celebration mimicking his father, Deion Sanders, during his heyday. After scoring the touchdown, he ran to his father on the sidelines and shared a father-son moment with Coach Prime.
Shilo Sanders bounces back and earns Coach Prime's praise
Shilo Sanders struggled against the Kansas State Wildcats in Week 7 action and was responsible for missing a few tackles, which did not earn him any favor with his dad, Colorado coach Deion Sanders. Coach Prime was honest with his assessment of his son's performance during his postgame news conference.
“He (Shilo) played horrible. He was rusty, didn’t have his footing and struggled in open-field tackles. But he’ll do better. I know what he has in him," Coach Prime said.
Shilo played much better in Tuscon against the Arizona Wildcats and was largely responsible for the Buffaloes holding the Wildcats' offense to just seven points. During his postgame news conference, his father complimented his performance.
“Proud of you (Shilo). We weren’t worried about you. You know we weren’t worried about you. That’s the first time they ever saw you vulnerable, so they attacked you like vultures. That’s just how America is,” Coach Prime said to Shilo.
Shilo Sanders was one of the bedrocks of the Colorado Buffaloes' defense last year. With the team one win away from eligibility and performing well in the Big 12, his timely return could help push the Buffs to new heights.
