The Vanderbilt Commodores will face the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Dec. 27 in the Birmingham Bowl. Vanderbilt had a middling season, highlighted by a Week 6 win over then-No. 1 Alabama, 40-35. The victory marked the Commodores' first over Alabama since 1984.

The game was also Vanderbillt's first-ever victory against an AP top-five school. The Commodores were 0-60 against top-five teams, the longest-ever streak by any school. The defeat probably cost Alabama a spot in the College Football Playoff.

Before that game, the Commodores had losses to Georgia State and Missouri. Afterward, they fell to Texas in Week 9 and closed the season with three straight defeats to South Carolina, LSU and Tennessee.

Birmingham Bowl: Odds and favorites

The Commodores (6-6, 3-5 SEC) are the underdogs for this encounter, although just slightly, with the booking agencies having Georgia Tech (7-5, 5-3 ACC) as 2.5-point favorites. The difference is slight and echoed by ESPN's game predictor, which is giving the Yellow Jackets a 52.1% chance of winning the encounter.

Georgia Tech lost to Syracuse, Louisville, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech and Georgia in the regular season. They had a pair of highlight wins over then-No. 10 Florida State and then No. 4 Miami. The latter probably cost the Hurricanes a spot in the College Football Playoff.
