What position did Kirby Smart play in college? Taking a look at Georgia HC's playing career

Kirby Smart is one of the best modern college football coaches. Smart went from Nick Saban's Alabama Crimson Tide to being a two-time national championship head coach in his own right.

Ahead of the Bulldogs' crucial Week 12 game against the Tennessee Volunteers, let's take a look at Smart's playing career.

What position did Kirby Smart play in college?

Kirby Smart was a defensive back in college football for the Georgia Bulldogs from 1995 to 1998.

The Bulldogs recruited Smart after a stellar high school career at Bainbridge High School in Bainbridge, Georgia. A hometown hero through and through, Smart represented the Bulldogs with distinction and earned a first-team All-SEC nod as a senior.

Smart's 13 interceptions are sixth in the program's history. He declared for the 1999 NFL draft but went undrafted. Indianapolis Colts signed him to a free agent contract. However, the two cut ties before the start of regular season.

How have Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs performed in 2024?

Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs started the season as favorites to secure a spot in the expanded college football playoffs. However, the Bulldogs have yet to live up to their lofty preseason expectations and are at risk of missing this year's playoffs.

The Bulldogs go into Week 12 with a 7-2 record. Yes, Smart's team has recorded statement wins over the Clemson Tigers, Kentucky Wildcats, Auburn Tigers, Texas Longhorns and Florida Gators. However, their losses against the Alabama Crimson Tide and Ole Miss Rebels put them outside the Top 10 of the AP Poll rankings as the season reaches its crescendo.

The Bulldogs must win their final three games convincingly while hoping that the teams ahead of them lose games. That is the only way they can move up the rankings and secure a spot in the inaugural 12-team college football playoff. It all begins with a must-win game against the high-flying Tennessee Volunteers in Week 12.
