Former Notre Dame safety Sergio Brown is facing charges of murder and concealment of a dead body following his arrest for the alleged killing of his mother on Oct. 10. He was reported missing following the murder incident but was later found and taken into custody.

Brown was apprehended in San Diego while attempting to re-enter the United States from Mexico, according to the Maywood Police Department in Illinois. He was extradited to Maywood, a suburb of Chicago, where he will face the murder charge.

According to reports, the ex-NFL player is scheduled to appear before a judge on Wednesday. He was transported from San Diego to Illinois, and the hearing is set to occur just a few miles from where he is accused of the murder. Sergio Brown's brother, Nick, also went missing after the incident.

Alleged assault on the mother

Brown's mother, Myrtle Brown, died due to an alleged fatal beating. An autopsy revealed that she had sustained multiple injuries consistent with an assault, leading the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office to classify her death as a homicide.

Her body was reportedly disposed of in a creek behind their residence in Maywood, Illinois. However, the body was discovered on Sept. 16, which triggered an immediate investigation by the police and a search for the whereabouts of Sergio Brown.

Myrtle Brown's family released a statement through legal representation following the news of the former NFL player’s arrest earlier this month.

"We are also heartened by the news that Sergio Brown has been apprehended and returned to the United States unharmed," the statement reads. "Our family is prayerful that, as the investigation progresses, more answers will become available, shedding light on the circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking incident."

Sergio Brown's football career

Sergio Brown had his college football career at Notre Dame before proceeding to the professional stage. He started his collegiate career with the Fighting Irish in 2006 and played a backup role in his first two seasons. He was, however, a starter on the team in 2008 and 2009.

The safety entered the 2010 NFL draft after his collegiate career but went undrafted. He subsequently signed for the New Patriots as an undrafted free agent. Brown was also part of the Indianapolis Colts, Atlanta Falcons, Jacksonville Jaguars and Buffalo Bills during his professional career.
