Brett Favre is renowned for his time with the Green Bay Packers, where he broke several records. Before his Hall of Fame NFL career began, the 1997 Super Bowl champion made his name in college football with the Southern Miss Golden Eagles.

During an appearance on Undeniable with Joe Buck, Favre revealed a hilarious story about his collegiate debut that was punctuated by a hangover from the previous night (0:35-2:00).

"I'd had a couple of beers the night before. Honestly, I had about two or three beers. So, we go for pre-game warmups, and I'm sweating bullets, probably reek like a beer keg, and right before the second quarter, right before halftime, we're down 17-3 and the head coach Jim Carmandy looks over at me, it was really an ugly day and he goes, 'You get loose, you're going in.
"I think I still had a little loopiness cause I thought, 'Damn, he wants me to punt.' I was the backup punter, I thought, 'Why in the hell would he put me in at quarterback?' So I was there stretching my leg, not throwing at all and I'm as flexible as a two-by-four. I'm kinda feeling a little second wind; I mean I'm going in to punt. I think back now and say 'What an idiot. No one goes in as a backup punter."

The Brett Favre game recalled

The game that introduced Brett Favre to college football fans pitted the Southern Miss Golden Eagles against the Tulane Green Wave on September 19, 1987. Alrick Young was the QB1 at the start of the season.

Favre was a safety. He practiced with the quarterbacks in the morning and the secondary in the afternoon and was not even listed on the depth chart.

In 2005, then-Golden Eagles coach Jim Carmody revealed to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel how he learned of Favre's exceptional throwing ability.

"The first morning, I was standing with my back to his group. I heard this noise, a whooshing sound. I turned around and said, 'What in the world is that?' I coached a long time, and I never heard a ball sound like that."

Former Dallas Cowboys chief scout Gil Brandt, who was at the game, revealed to the Clarion Ledger how shocking it was when Brett Favre entered in the second half against Tulane.

"He (Favre) was on the flip chart as a safety. Southern Miss was behind by two touchdowns and here's this kid who wasn't even listed on the two-deep as a quarterback. I always laugh about Brett Favre's first game against Tulane."

Brett Favre threw two touchdowns, and the Southern Miss Golden Eagles rallied to win the game 31-24. Favre won the QB1 job, and the rest is history. He went on to become a Green Bay Packers legend.
