Who Makes the Cut? Inside the 12-Team College Football Playoff Expansion
For the first time in CFP history, 12 teams will compete for the national championship in 2024. Five automatic bids will go to the highest-ranked conference champions, while seven additional at-large spots will fill out the bracket, marking a shift from the four-team model used from 2014 to 2023.
Under the previous system, only the top four teams were selected, while the earlier BCS model featured a two-team playoff to determine the national champion. Now, a broader range of teams will have a shot at college football’s highest honor.
How the New College Football Playoff Format Works?
The top four teams, consisting of the highest-ranked conference champions, will earn a first-round bye and automatically advance to the quarterfinals. The remaining eight teams in the 5-12 ranking slots will play first-round games, with higher-ranked teams hosting these matches.
For these matchups, No. 5 will host No. 12, No. 6 will host No. 11, No. 7 will host No. 10, and No. 8 will face No. 9. The winners will then face the top four seeds in the quarterfinals, with the higher seeds earning preferential bowl placements.
The Fiesta, Peach, Rose, and Sugar Bowls will host quarterfinal games, while the Orange and Cotton Bowls will feature in the semifinals. The final championship game will be hosted at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium in early 2025.
