Mertz started his college football career with the Wisconsin Badgers in 2019 and announced his transfer to Florida in 2023. Graham joined the Gators as a redshirt junior and is a redshirt senior in 2024. At Wisconsin, Graham Mertz debuted as a freshman in 2019 and was redshirted after two games. In 2020, as a redshirt freshman, Mertz started seven games for the Badgers and became the first Wisconsin freshman to start a season opener at quarterback since 1978. Mertz became a regular starter for the Badgers until his junior year in 2022. He was also a three-time Academic All-Big Ten (2019, 2021, 2022).
