James Evans plays for the Indiana Hoosiers as a punter. Before joining the Hoosiers, Evans had never played football or visited the United States. He was trained by Nathan Chapman and John Smith at Prokick Australia, a punter and kicker training facility in Melbourne, before making his way to the United States.

Evans started all 12 of his games as a punter in his rookie campaign with the Indiana Hoosiers in 2021. As a sophomore, Evans secured an honorable mention in the All-Big Ten team by the media panels and the conference coaches. He was also included in the Ray Guy Award preseason watch list. The New Zealander started all 12 games as a punter and was ranked third nationally in terms of punts downed within the 10-yard line (13) and the 20-yard line (30). During his junior season, Evans was selected by Phil Steele to the fourth team of the All-Big Ten, while the league media panel placed him on the third.
