During his six seasons with the Buckeyes (2018-2023), Johnson played in 56 games, starting four times. He was one of only three players to letter five times due to the extra eligibility year granted by the COVID-19 pandemic. On special teams, he logged 924 special teams snaps across all four units and played at wide receiver, running back, and cornerback. He finished his Ohio State career with 346 rushing yards, one rushing touchdown, 26 receptions for 329 yards, and two receiving touchdowns. He returned 27 kickoffs for 582 yards, averaging 21.5 yards per return.

In 2023, Xavier Johnson was named team captain and received the Block O jersey, awarded for toughness, accountability, and character. He also completed his master’s degree in translational data analytics in May 2023, following his graduation in December 2021 with a degree in consumer and family financial services. Johnson was recognized as an OSU Scholar-Athlete multiple times during his career, starting in 2018. He was known for his strong performances in big games, such as his touchdowns in the College Football Playoff semifinals against Georgia and his 24-yard TD reception against Notre Dame in 2022.

After going undrafted in the 2024 NFL Draft, Johnson signed with the Buffalo Bills as a free agent but was released during final roster cuts in August 2024. Shortly after, on August 29, 2024, he signed with the Houston Texans' practice squad.
