His father brought him up, and his older brother, Kevin Jr. Donovan, comes from a family with a sports background, as his grandfather, Charlie Primas Jr., earned the title of Mr. Basketball in Michigan in 1950. Further contributing to the family's legacy, Donovan's maternal grandfather, Charlie Primas Jr., was a Harlem Globetrotter. Charlie Primas Jr. passed away in 2020.

During his senior year, 2020, Donovan demonstrated his exceptional skills by rushing for an impressive 1,502 yards and scoring 30 touchdowns. His outstanding performance ultimately led West Bloomfield to victory in the Division 1 state championship. His excellent performance earned him several prestigious accolades. One of his notable honors was being named the Gatorade Michigan Football Player of the Year for 2020-21 and receiving recognition as the Detroit Free Press 2020 football dream team captain. In addition, he was honored with the title of Mr. Football for the state of Michigan. Edwards' remarkable achievements earned him a five-star recruit rating by 247Sports.


College career

In December 2020, Donovan Edwards publicly declared his commitment to the University of Michigan by announcing his decision on ESPN. He picked Michigan over other notable universities, such as the University of Notre Dame, the University of Georgia, and the University of Oklahoma. In January 2021, he began his early enrollment at Michigan.


During his freshman year in 2021, Edwards showcased his talent by rushing for 174 yards on eight carries and catching 20 passes for 265 yards. He scored his first two touchdowns in a game against Northern Illinois on September 18. An impressive moment came during the Big Ten Championship Game against Iowa on December 4 when Edwards threw a remarkable 75-yard touchdown pass to Roman Wilson after receiving a backward pass from quarterback Cade McNamara.


Continuing his success into his sophomore year in 2022, Edwards displayed his skills with 872 rushing yards, 192 receiving yards, and nine touchdowns. In a standout game against Ohio State on November 26, he rushed for an impressive 216 yards, including touchdown runs of 75 and 85 yards in the fourth quarter. He also had an exceptional performance in the Big Ten Championship game, rushing for 185 yards and scoring one touchdown against Purdue.
