The Colorado Buffaloes will host the Stanford Cardinal in Pac-12 Conference action on Friday night. The Cardinal (1-4, 0-3 in Pac-12) are on a four-game losing streak, while the Buffaloes (4-2, 1-2) are trying to get a winning streak going.
ESPN will be airing this game and has their crew calling their second Colorado Buffaloes game this season. They were the announcers on the Rocky Mountain Showdown. Mark Jones will handle the play-by-play, Louis Riddick will be the analyst, and Quint Kessenich will be the sideline reporter.
It is expected to be an entertaining matchup as the Buffaloes are on track to have two-way star Travis Hunter return from his lacerated liver injury that has kept him out since the game against Colorado State. With the Buffs as a heavy favorite in this matchup, this can be a chance for the team to "get fat" on the lesser conference opponents on the schedule.
Can Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders get his name in the Heisman Trophy race with a strong performance?
This is a tricky situation as Buffaloes quarterback junior Shedeur Sanders has not been that high on the betting odds for the 2023 Heisman Trophy list. There are many incredible QBs ahead of him, but it is not like Sanders is struggling in any sense of the word.
So far this season, Sanders is 186-of-256 (72.7 completion percentage) for 2,020 yards with 16 touchdown passes compared to two interceptions. In addition, he has also run the ball for three rushing touchdowns to continue finding the end zone. Travis Hunter's return will give Sanders an extra boost as Hunter has the capabilities to be the top receiver and opens up the options.
This would slide senior wide receiver Xavier Weaver back into the second wide receiver position and have two talented pass-catchers out wide compared to one. Sanders has been playing well in the absence of Hunter, but the numbers have dipped since the injury. While it would be difficult to think Shedeur Sanders can make the incredible leap from where he is now to the top of the Heisman Trophy consideration, it technically is possible.
However, this proves that Sanders should be the top candidate for next season's Heisman Trophy odds if he returns for his senior season instead of entering the 2024 NFL draft.
