Haynes King was one of the biggest prospects coming out of high school in the class of 2020.
The quarterback was rated five-star and was highly sought-after among NCAA Division I programs. However, college football hasn’t gone as expected and he has committed to Georgia Tech.
A Longview High School product, King committed to playing college football with the Texas A&M Aggies after evaluating his offers. He took high school football by storm, recording outstanding numbers during his years at Longview.
His three seasons playing for the school saw him record a total of 7,537 passing yards and 82 touchdowns. He also rushed for 1,392 yards and 20 touchdowns during this time. King also earned a spot in the 2020 Under Armour All-American Game during his senior year.
Haynes King's college career
Haynes King served as a backup quarterback to Kellen Mond during his freshman year in 2020 at Texas A&M. He appeared in only two games of which both were from the bench. However, prior to the 2021 season, he was designated as the starting quarterback for the team.
In his sophomore year, King sustained a lower right leg injury just two games into the season. As a result, he was unable to continue playing for the rest of the game and was substituted by sophomore Zach Calzada. The injury was serious and kept him out indefinitely.
Returning from injury, the signal-caller was once again named the starting quarterback for the Aggies by head coach Jimbo Fisher. However, as a result of average performances he was unable to end the season as the first choice in the quarterback role.
After another underwhelming season, King entered the transfer portal on December 2, 2022. Reports emerged on December 18, 2022, stating that King had decided to transfer to Georgia Tech. The quarterback now seeks a new beginning with the Yellow Jackets.
Although King possesses athletic qualities, he did not have ample opportunities to fully utilize his skill set within Jimbo Fisher's offensive system. Throughout his tenure as an Aggie, King managed to accumulate 1,579 passing yards and 10 touchdowns in 10 games.
Failed project with the Aggies
When King made the decision to commit to the Aggies over Tennessee in the summer of 2019, he was highly regarded as the future of the program. The Aggies, media, and fans alike saw him as the quarterback to lead the team’s offense to a greater height.
His teammates and coaches were full of praise for his leadership abilities and athleticism, expressing their admiration both privately and in public forums following his arrival. Without an atom of doubt, he was considered the apparent heir to Kellen Mond.
However, things didn't go as planned. The Longview High School product failed to hit the ground running with the Aggies. Haynes King had decided to stay at home and play in front of local fans when he committed to Texas A&M. However, that won't be happening anymore.
