Maryland Terps assistant coach Kevin Sumlin arrested

In recent news, Kevin Sumlin, who currently serves as the co-offensive coordinator for the Maryland Terrapins and previously held head coaching positions at institutions like the Texas A&M Aggies, is facing legal troubles. Sumlin was arrested in the early hours of Sunday in Florida on suspicion of driving under the influence.

The arrest occurred at 12:40 a.m. along a highway east of downtown Tampa. Following the arrest, Sumlin was booked into the Hillsborough County jail but was released just before 9 a.m. on Sunday after posting bond. Reportedly, the Terps coach declined to take a breathalyzer test during the arrest.

Sumlin now faces a second-degree misdemeanor charge. This charge could lead to a maximum jail sentence of 60 days and/or a fine of no more than $500. In response to this incident, Maryland Athletics issued a statement to ESPN saying,

“Maryland Athletics is aware of the incident this past weekend involving football coach Kevin Sumlin. As this is an ongoing investigation, we will have no further comment.”

As for his role within the Maryland Terps, it remains unclear whether Sumlin will continue working this week. Terps Head Coach Mike Locksley said:

"As coaches, we have to set the example & model the behavior that we want [for] our players…he’s part of our football family & we’re going to support Kevin [Sumlin]…we’ll let the personnel…kind of dictate how things play out"

The Maryland Terrapins (5-2, 2-2 Big Ten) are scheduled to play Northwestern on Saturday. The arrest has raised questions about his immediate future with the team.
