Players to watch in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl
Playing the bowl season undermanned is an issue many teams are facing. Count Northern Illinois and Fresno State among them as both lost key players to the transfer portal.
Northern Illinois' starting quarterback, Ethan Hampton, and leading receiver, Trayvon Rudolph, entered the transfer portal and will not be available. The Huskies had a promising start after beating Notre Dame on the road. However, a handful of close losses kept them in the middle of the conference.
Fresno State starting quarterback Mikey Keene also entered the portal. Joshua Wood and Jayden Mandal are the backups, but they have no meaningful game experience. Receivers Jalen Moss and Raylen Sharpe will not be available either. One player who will be on the field is leading receiver Mac Dalena. Dalena is entering the NFL draft after the season.
Here are the key players for each team entering the game.
Josh Holst, quarterback, Northern Illinois Huskies
Holst got some playing experience during the year, going 47-for-81 for 411 yards and an interception. Holst also ran for 165 yards and a touchdown. A strong game from the freshman would be a big advantage for the Huskies.
Mac Dalena, wide receiver, Fresno State Bulldogs
The passing game for the Bulldogs will be depleted due to the opt-outs. But whoever starts the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl at quarterback will have Mac Dalena to throw to. Dalena will enter the NFL draft after leading the team with 58 receptions for 947 yards and eight touchdowns. He will look to finish his career on a high note.
