What to expect in the USC vs. Notre Dame matchup

Saturday will mark the 95th encounter between these two teams, a rivalry that dates back to 1926. Additionally, this year celebrates the 50th anniversary of USC’s remarkable comeback against Notre Dame in 1974. The Trojans turned around a 6-24 halftime deficit to triumph 55-24, ultimately securing the national championship.

USC enters the game with momentum, winning its last two games under quarterback Jayden Maiava. Against Notre Dame’s defense, Maiava must continue to protect the ball and rely on the ground game, led by Woody Marks and Quinten Joyner. The Trojans’ red zone efficiency remains a concern, as they managed just nine points on nine plays inside the five-yard line against UCLA.

Notre Dame’s defense, ranked No. 4 in the nation, will challenge USC. The Irish excel at limiting big plays and have allowed only 15 touchdowns this season, tied for the fourth-fewest in the country. While the Trojans may struggle to move the ball through the air, attacking Notre Dame’s run defense, which gives up 133.5 yards per game, could provide opportunities.

Under new defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn, USC’s defense has seen some improvement. After allowing 34.4 points per game in 2023, the Trojans now rank 32nd nationally, giving up 21.2 points per game. Their rushing defense has also improved significantly, rising from 116th in 2023 to 43rd this season.
