Boo Carter has been impressive for Tennessee so far in 2024. The true freshman has appeared in all three games played by the Volunteers so far and has made five tackles as a defensive back. He is set to become a more important player for the team as the season progresses.

During his recruiting process, Carter was a coveted prospect in the class of 2024. He had offers from reputable college football programs including Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon, Florida State, Miami, LSU and a host of others. However, he eventually committed to Tennessee.

Coming out of Bradley High School in Cleveland, Tennessee, the Volunteers were definitely a top choice for him. The privilege of playing college football in his home state was too good to turn down and this was a crucial factor in his decision to commit to Tennessee.

“What stood out to me is that they know how to use their players well on both sides of the ball,” Carter said. “They were moving up on my chart every time I visited Tennessee. It just felt like home and I felt like I would shine more there because that’s my home state.
“Also, my family, friends and fans from my city don’t have to go as far to come watch me play and I like that as well. But I like how coach Nez uses his guys and how he works around them during practice and during games.”

Boo Carter’s relationship with Willie Martinez also played a role

While Carter was lured by the prospect of playing football in his home state of Tennessee, his relationship with the Volunteers cornerback’s coach Willie Martinez also played a role in his decision.

Martinez has, over the last few years, built a strong relationship with coach Carter during his recruiting process and the player was eager to play college football under him.

“My relationship with Coach Nez has been really close, tight and just felt right ever since he gave me my first offer,” Carter said following his commitment to the Volunteers. “ So, I was very blessed by him giving me the opportunity at the next level.”

Listed as an athlete, Boo Carter was the No. 232 prospect in the class of 2024, according to Sportskeeda’s Composite ranking. A series of injuries at defensive back for Tennessee during the fall camp has earned him early action at the program and he has been impressive so far for the Volunteers.
