Caleb Downs transferred to Ohio State from Alabama earlier this year. The safety was named the Southeastern Conference's Freshman of the Year in 2023 after a stellar first season with the Tide.
As per reports, Downs had turned down offers from over 30 programs to join Alabama in 2023. However, when all was going smoothly for Downs with his dream move and a fantastic debut season with the Tide, fans have been curious to know why the player left the program this year.
Notably, Downs transferred to Ohio State only a few days after legendary coach Nick Saban left Alabama in January. His decision to leave the Tide may have stemmed from Saban's retirement.
In an interview after joining Ohio State, Downs expressed his surprise after he was informed that Saban was leaving Alabama.
“It was a huge surprise walking into that meeting,” Downs said. “(Saban) saying that made my heart dropped for sure. But at the end of the day, if that’s what he felt what’s best for him I love him for it. That’s what he needed to do.
“I just felt like (going to Ohio State) was the best decision for me. At the end of the day, everybody’s got to do what they needed to for themselves.”
In his one season at Alabama, Downs racked up 107 tackles, of which 70 were solo. He also recorded three passes defended, two interceptions and one forced fumble.
Caleb Downs is expected to play a big role for Ohio State in 2024 season
Despite playing only one season of collegiate football, Caleb Downs has established himself as one of the top safeties in the country. He is tipped to play a critical role in Ohio State's defense in the 2024 season.
The Buckeyes finished the 2023 season with an 11-2 record, as coach Ryan Day's team narrowly missed out on the playoffs.
Now, with the addition of Downs to Ohio State's defense, the Buckeyes will aim for a spot in the College Football Playoff, which has expanded to 12 teams in the upcoming season.
