The No. 1 Texas Longhorns (5-0) will take on the No. 18 Oklahoma Sooners (4-1) in the Red River Rivalry game on Saturday. Perceptive fans will notice that the game started to take its old moniker after years of being called the Red River Showdown.
Regardless of the minor variations in how the game is referred to, it is named after the river that separates parts of Oklahoma and Texas. It is a rivalry that dates back to 1900 and has been a constant in college football for over 100 years.
Why is it called the Red River Rivalry?
Although the rivalry has undergone a few changes in what it is called, one thing has remained the same: "Red River." This is about the river of the same name that runs between the states of Texas and Oklahoma.
What was the Red River Rivalry called before?
This rivalry has undergone a few name changes over the years. It originated as the Red River Shootout but in 2005 it was changed to the SBC Red River Rivalry for the 100th game in the rivalry to distance itself from gun violence.
The game changed to the Red River Showdown in 2014 before eventually switching back to the Red River Rivalry in 2023.
Red River Rivalry's past scores
The rivalry game this weekend will be the 120th matchup between these two teams. Texas has the edge in the series (63-51-5). However, Oklahoma has had the edge recently, winning four of the last five games and six of the last eight.
Last year, Oklahoma was the No. 12 ranked team in the nation and upset No. 3 Texas 34-30. Texas' last win came in 2022 when they easily handled Oklahoma in a 49-0 blowout.
Texas has the longest win streak in the rivalry, winning eight games in a row from 1958 to 1965. Oklahoma's longest win streak was six games between 1952 and 1957. Interestingly, Texas is 4-0-1 in games when it is the number-one team in the country, which is the case this year.
