Daniel Hill’s college career at Alabama has started on a brilliant note. In the first two games, the true freshman running back showed Tuscaloosa fans a glimpse of what to expect from him over the next few years.

Nick Saban was the major factor that led Hill to commit to Alabama in January. He had offers from other reputable programs like Tennessee, Texas, Michigan, Oregon and Florida State. However, he was eager to play under the seven-time national champion.

“I just want to be great, I want to be coached by the greatest to ever do it,” Hill said after his commitment to Alabama. "I feel they give me the best opportunity to succeed down the line.”
“I enjoy being around the whole coaching staff, they are all good coaches. Me and Coach G are the closest and have been for a while, I also have a really good relationship with Coach Saban.”

However, Saban announced his retirement a few days after Hill committed to the Crimson Tide, crushing his hope of playing under the coach. Nonetheless, he continued with the program instead of entering the transfer portal.

Daniel Hill’s commitment to Alabama came unexpectedly

Daniel Hill announced his commitment decision during the 2024 All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas. The commitment decision wasn’t expected at that period by Alabama coaches.

He had previously signed with the Crimson Tide in the early signing day period in December. Still, he delayed announcing his decision until January, keeping the suspense until his formal public commitment.

“I didn’t tell Coach Saban,” Hill said. “It wasn’t me. When the decision happened, it happened on Signing Day and I still wasn’t 100% sure where I wanted to go, but I just had to make a decision. I didn’t tell him, it was my parents. I still haven’t talked to him about it.”

Hill has also maintained a cordial relationship with Alabama running backs coach Robert Gillespie.

“We’ve had a relationship for a while,” Hill said of coach Gillespie. “It’s not even just about recruiting. But ever since they gave me the offer in the 9th grade, we’ve just been getting closer and closer as the months and years go by to this point now.”

In his first two games at Alabama, Daniel Hill has rushed for 37 yards and one touchdown in 13 carries. He is anticipated to become a force in the Crimson Tide’s running back room over the next couple of years.
