Why did Dylan Raiola leave Ohio State? A look at Nebraska star's commitment journey

In December 2022, Dylan Raiola de-committed from the Ohio State Buckeyes and took his talents to the Georgia Bulldogs instead. At that time, Raiola was the No. 1 overall prospect in the 2024 class.

A 6-foot-3, 220-pound high school prospect, Raiola was viewed as the top overall prospect and the No. 1 pocket-passing quarterback for the 2024 cycle as well. His decision to leave Ohio State in the dark sent shock waves around the program. However, he had his reasons for it.

Why did Dylan Raiola leave Ohio State Buckeyes?

Dylan Raiola verbally committed to play college football for Ohio State in May 2022. However, he later reversed his commitment and committed to Kirby Smart's Bulldogs.

Raiola's decision to leave Ohio State was likely due to various factors. First, he has deep family ties to the Nebraska Cornhuskers, so perhaps the Georgia Bulldogs move was a smokescreen for an eventual commitment to play for his father's alma mater and uncle's current workplace.

Furthermore, Raiola may not have been pleased with Ohio State's decision to recruit four-star class of 2023 quarterback Lincoln Kienholz, who flipped his commitment from Washington to Ohio State just a few days before Raiola announced his decision to leave.

Will Dylan Raiola be a starter in his freshman year?

Raiola has since flipped his collegiate football commitment again, joining the Nebraska Cornhuskers. With the Cornhuskers, he has a solid chance of starting college football games as a freshman quarterback, an honor usually reserved for the pick of the bunch.

According to On3, while the Cornhuskers supposedly have a starting quarterback competition ahead of the college football season, it's clear for all who'll be starting at center. Sean Callahan of On3’s Husker Online said:

"Matt Rhule has not said it, but it's obvious to anybody around the program.
"They will put out a depth chart. They will have one more week of training camp, and it would not surprise me if, after this week, they define things much clearer," he added.

Nebraska has a couple of collegiate veteran quarterbacks that could step in if the Dylan Raiola experiment does not work. Heinrich Haarberg was last year's starter and won games for the Cornhuskers in that position. While Haarberg's ability as a wildcat formation option is greatly appreciated, expect to see Raiola under center to start the season.
