Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy provided insight on why his players will don helmets with QR codes in the upcoming 2024 college football season. The Cowboys are implementing a new method to raise NIL funds for its players.
Coach Gundy spoke about the new approach of allowing fans to donate toward a "general team fund" for student-athletes or give financial credit to a certain player.
“This is a revolutionary step forward to help keep Oklahoma State football ahead of the game,” coach Gundy said in a statement. “It gives a chance for everyday fans across the world to have a real impact when it comes to supporting the NIL efforts for Cowboy football. I’m thrilled about this opportunity for our players.”
As per reports, the QR code back of each OSU helmet is measured at 1.5 square inches. The Cowboys have also informed fans that while the codes won't be visible from the stands on game day, fans watching television broadcasts can capture them on their phones to make donations.
The team also believes this method will help raise Oklahoma State's NIL value throughout the 2024 college football season.
Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy urges players to focus on upcoming season amid NIL distractions
While speaking to the media last week, Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy spoke on the distractions of the NIL era, with having agents for college athletes. He also urged his Cowboys players to remain focused on the upcoming season.
"We have to have those conversations with [the players]. 'Tell your agent to quit calling us and asking for more money.' It's non-negotiable now. It'll start again in December," Gundy said. "So now we're able to direct ourselves just in football, and that part is fun.
"The good news is, the next five months we can just play football. There's no negotiating now. The portal's over. All the negotiation's history. Now we're playing football."
Gundy's Cowboys will begin their season by hosting South Dakota State on Aug. 31 at Boone Pickens Stadium. Oklahoma State quarterback Alan Bowman, who will play in his seventh collegiate season, will lead the offense for the team.
