Will FSU HC MIke Norvell get suspended? Exploring the potential consequences of Level II NIL violations

Florida State v Miami
Mike Norvell in Florida State vs Miami

Mike Norvell looks to have taken Florida State to the pinnacle of college football following their exploits in the 2023 season. In his second season in charge of the Seminoles, the team finished the season undefeated, claiming the Atlantic Coast Conference championship.

However, it has been a rough period for the Seminoles since the conclusion of the regular season, as they were denied a place in the College Football Playoff and also recorded a blowout loss to Georgia in the Orange Bowl. The program is now engulfed in some infraction cases.

With the NCAA opening the proceedings on the infraction case, let's examine the fate of Mike Norvell.

Will Mike Norvell get suspended?

Florida State is expected to be sanctioned by the NCAA for an infraction after the school reached a negotiated resolution with the governing body. However, Mike Norvell is not expected to receive any punishment, as he wasn’t named in the report to have committed any violations.

According to Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde, the case against the university football program revolves around violations related to NIL rules. The alleged actions involve a Florida State assistant coach and a booster trying to facilitate the transfer of a player from Georgia.

Although the attempt was unsuccessful, the staff will still be sanctioned. The violations attributed to the assistant coach were categorized as Level II in the negotiated resolution. The implicated booster has reportedly been disassociated from the Florida State program.

FSU becomes the first school sanctioned for NIL violation

Following the negotiated resolution, Florida State has become the first school to face NCAA sanctions for using NIL payments as a recruiting inducement.

The school did not prolong the case by agreeing with the NCAA on many facts concerning the alleged infraction.

“We are pleased to reach closure to this situation and view this as another step in strengthening our culture of compliance at Florida State University,” Michael Alford, vice-president and director of athletics at FSU said in the statement.
“We take all compliance matters very seriously, and our full cooperation with the NCAA on this case is a clear example of that commitment. We remain committed to compliance with all NCAA rules including disassociation of the booster and the collective.”

Although there have been complaints about many schools getting involved in the practice in the last few years, none of them have been found guilty. NIL has ensured that student-athletes get to benefit from their popularity, but the concept is being abused lately, especially in the college football landscape.
