Will Jeremiah Smith start at Ohio State? Exploring Buckeyes star's position in 2024

Jeremiah Smith enters the 2024 college football season as one of the country's most hyped freshman wide receivers. He enters a stacked Ohio State Buckeyes team with a firm aim of starting in his first season at the collegiate level.

On Smith's chances of starting, coach Ryan Day said:

The Buckeyes lost two important pass catchers from last season. Julian Fleming transferred to Penn State while Marvin Harrison Jr. entered the NFL. Smith couldn't have arrived at a better time for the collegiate powerhouse.

Jeremiah Smith is the latest five-star wide receiver to commit to Ohio State

According to The Columbus Dispatch, Jeremiah Smith is the seventh five-star wide receiver to commit to Ohio State since 2019. The Buckeyes have become a wide receiver factory in recent years, sending Garrett Wilson, Chris Olave, Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Marvin Harrison Jr. to the NFL as first-round picks over the past three drafts. According to ESPN, the college has yet to generate more first-round picks from the same position.

Smith has the potential to build an impressive collegiate football career at Ohio State. He is fresh off back-to-back-to-back 1,000-yard high school football seasons at Chaminade-Madonna. He amassed 2,487 receiving yards and 39 touchdowns in the 2022 and 2023 high school seasons.

Smith's potential is there for all to see. However, he'll need to put his head down and compete as a starting job at wide receiver at Ohio State, one of the most coveted spots in college football.

Smith's first game with the Buckeyes could be against Akron on Aug. 31 at Ohio Stadium, Columbus, Ohio. Ohio State's last game of the college football regular season is against the Michigan Wolverines on Nov. 30 in Ohio.
