Alabama Crimson Tide linebacker Keanu Koht has been notably absent in recent games, missing victories against LSU and Mercer. On Nov. 11, Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer announced Koht had been suspended indefinitely.
While the exact reason for his suspension has not been confirmed, speculation suggests an alleged incident involving DeBoer's daughter. Amid the controversy, Koht’s future with the Crimson Tide has taken a different turn.
Keanu Koht enters the transfer portal
On Tuesday, Koht announced his decision to enter the transfer portal. In a statement, Koht expressed gratitude to Alabama while also revealing his desire for a fresh start.
“After careful reflection and consideration, I’ve come to realize that I’ve outgrown the shoes I once wore. With that in mind, I have made the decision to enter my name into the transfer portal with two years of eligibility remaining.”
His decision comes after the suspension, which kept him sidelined for Alabama’s last two games. Koht thanked his coaches, teammates, and fans for their support during his time at the university.
“Dear Bama Nation, I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has been a part of my journey here at the University of Alabama. The lessons I’ve learned, the relationships I’ve built, and the experiences I’ve gained during my time here are truly priceless,” he said.
Koht becomes the second Alabama player to enter the transfer portal this season, following defensive lineman Jeheim Oatis, who made his announcement in October.
In 2024, Koht appeared in four games, delivering some big moments such as the safety against Georgia. He also recovered a fumble against South Carolina and had rotational roles in games against Western Kentucky and USF.
In the 2023 season, Koht recorded four tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss, across three games.
A recruit from Vero Beach, Koht earned a four-star rating from multiple recruiting services. He was ranked among the top edge rushers in the country and chose Alabama over offers from LSU and other prominent programs.
What’s Next for Koht?
Koht’s decision to transfer marks the end of a promising chapter at Alabama. With two years of eligibility left, he has the opportunity to find a program where he can contribute more significantly and get a fresh start.
