Texas A&M secured another crucial victory on Saturday to remain undefeated in the Southeastern Conference this campaign. The Aggies came from behind in the second half to defeat LSU 38-23 at Kyle Field, showcasing their quick resurgence under the leadership of Mike Elko this season.
The latest win has elevated the program into the College Football Playoff conversation. The playoffs get expanded to 12 teams this season from the usual four, and the Aggies have become a serious contender for a spot.
Will Texas A&M make the College Football Playoff?
The No. 10 Texas A&M Aggies (7-1, 5-0 SEC) have a strong chance of securing a spot in the CFP. The Aggies are at the top of the SEC standing and haven't tasted a loss so far in the conference play.
Should the Aggies win out their remaining schedule, they will be in the SEC championship game. Securing the conference title offers them an automatic place in the playoff and a bye in the first round of the postseason tournament.
The team also has a strong chance of making the playoffs as one of the at-large teams if it suffers just one loss in its remaining games. One loss might rule the Aggies out of the league title game depending on the record of others, but it keeps their playoff hopes alive.
Texas A&M is scheduled to face South Carolina, New Mexico State, Auburn and Texas in the remainder of the regular season. This keeps their playoff chances very strong.
How has Texas A&M performed this season so far?
Texas A&M has been largely impressive under the leadership of Mike Elko this season. The coach replaced Jimbo Fisher last year and has made an instant impact.
The Aggies started the season with a loss to Notre Dame but have been on a winning streak ever since. They’ve defeated the likes of Florida, Arkansas, Missouri and LSU. Elko expressed his confidence in the program following Saturday's recent win over the Tigers.
"We’re very honest,” Elko said in the postgame press conference. “We’re very open. This is a real program. It’s not fake. It’s not a politician running this program, talking fast and BS-ing everybody. This is a real program and for all the recruits out there, this is a real place."
Texas A&M playoff record by year
Texas A&M is yet to make an appearance in the CFP. The Aggies have struggled to compete in the SEC since they amazed everyone in their inaugural season in the conference.
