His football career started in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he played at Summit Country Day High School. Johnson finished his high school career with 32 receptions for 766 yards and 8 touchdowns, as well as 623 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns. He also made waves on special teams, scoring six times via punt or kickoff returns, including a remarkable 99-yard interception return. Although he had scholarship offers from several colleges, Johnson opted to walk on at Ohio State.
